Glen Ridge HS boys’ basketball team tops University in state tourney opener

GLEN RIDGE – Sophomore Tyler Liddy scored 16 points; and junior Charlie DeLuca and sophomore George Kinzler each had eight points to lead the sixth-seeded Glen Ridge High School boys’ varsity basketball team to a 48-41 home win over 11th-seeded University in the first round of the state North Jersey Section 2, Group 1 tournament on Monday, Feb. 29.

Ryan Liddy had seven points and fellow junior Max Thompson had five for the Ridgers, who improved to a 12-13 record. GRHS was scheduled to visit third-seeded University in the quarterfinals on March 2 in Newark. The winner will face either second-seeded American History or No. 10 seed Newark Collegiate in the semifinals on March 4. The final is March 8.

In earlier action, Kinzler had 14 points and five rebounds and Tyler Liddy had 12 points and seven assists to lead the Ridgers to a 59-53 home win over Oratory on Feb. 24.

DeLuca had 11 points and five rebounds; sophomore David Weissberger posted seven points and three rebounds; Ryan Liddy and sophomore Avery Hackett each had six points and freshman Liam Gunnarsson had added three points for the Ridgers

Tyler Liddy had 14 points and Gunnarsson and Weissberger each had 10 points in the 75-55 home loss to Montclair Kimberley Academy in the regular-season finale on Feb. 26. Kinzler had seven; DeLuca, Hackett and junior Nick Weber-Zazzu each had four; and Ryan Liddy added two.

In earlier action, the Ridgers lost to Roselle Park, 48-45, on a three-pointer by Khaleel Roach as time expired. Tyler Liddy scored 14 points; DeLuca had 11 points; Ryan Liddy had 10 points; Weissenberger scored eight points and Kinzler added two points.
