GLEN RIDGE, NJ – The Glen Ridge High School boys’ varsity basketball team has enjoyed a strong start to the season.
The Ridgers defeated People’s Prep before losing to Bloomfield for its first loss of the season in the annual GRHS Holiday Tournament.
Junior Liam Gunnarsson had 24 points; senior Avery Hackett had 14 points; and junior Kevin Mathew had 10 in the 68-23 win over People’s Prep in the opening round on Dec. 27 Junior Simon Low had eight points and senior Christian Samuels had six points.
The Ridgers fell to Bloomfield, 64-47, in the final on Dec. 28 to move to a 5-1 record. Gunnarsson had 13 points with four 3-pointers and three assists; senior co-captain Tyler Liddy had 11 points with two 3-pointers and three assists; senior co-captain George Kinzler recorded eight points; Hackett registered seven points and senior co-captain David Weissberger posted six points. Bloomfield improved to 5-1.
In previous action, Gunnarsson scored 17 points and Hackett netted 11 to lead the Ridgers to a 49-34 win over Livingston on Dec. 19. Kinzler had eight points; Low scored five; senior co-captain Tyler Liddy collected four points, five rebounds and four assists; and Mathew and Weissenberger each had two points.
Hackett scored 20 points and Samuels had 12 points in the 60-40 home win over Newark Arts on Dec. 21. Weissenberger scored 11 points; Liam Gunnarsson had 10 points; Kinzler had four points; Matthew added two points and Low had one point.
