GLEN RIDGE, NJ (updated Tuesday Oct. 18, 5:11 p.m.) – The 11th-seeded Glen Ridge High School boys’ varsity soccer team rallied to defeat No. 22 seed Belleville, 2-1, in the second preliminary round of the Essex County Tournament on Monday, Oct. 17, at Watsessing Park.
Belleville opened the scoring 10 minutes into the second half. With 13 minutes remaining, GRHS junior Christian Samuels scored the tying goal. Senior Flynn Martin scored the game-winner with three minutes left in regulation. GRHS, which improved to a 10-3 record, was scheduled to visit sixth-seeded Millburn in the first round on Oct. 19. The winner will face the winner between No. 3 seed West Orange and No. 14 Verona in the quarterfinals on Saturday, Oct. 22.
The semifinals will be held at Millburn HS on Oct. 26 at 5 p.m. and 7 p.m. The final is Sunday, Oct. 30, at Montclair State University at 2 p.m.
