GLEN RIDGE, NJ – The Glen Ridge High School boys’ varsity soccer team enjoyed a great run this season.
The top-seeded Ridgers lost a heartbreaking 2-1 decision in double overtime to second-seeded Dayton in the championship game of the state North Jersey Section 2, Group 1 tournament on Thursday, Nov. 10, at Watsessing Park.
Dayton scored with less than one minute remaining in the second overtime. The game would have went to a penalty kick shootout if the score remained tied at the end of the second overtime.
Lucas Burke gave the Ridgers a 1-0 lead with a goal off a corner kick in the ninth minute. Dayton tied it with a goal in the 35th minute. After a scoreless second half, the game went to two overtimes.
Quinn Allemand made eight saves for the Ridgers, who finished the season with an impressive 14-6-1 record under head coach Steve Reitberger.
It was the Ridgers’ first section final appearance since 2011 when it won the section.
