Glen Ridge HS boys’ tennis team falls to New Providence in state sectional tournament championship

GLEN RIDGE – The top-seeded Glen Ridge High School boys’ varsity tennis team lost to third-seeded New Providence, 3-2, in the championship of the North Jersey Section 2, Group 1 tournament on May 23 at Freeman Courts.

William Cotrone won at first singles and Joseph Biancamano won at second singles for the Ridgers. Cotrone, a junior, defeated Christopher Kang, 6-2, 6-3, and Biancamano, a sophomore, defeated David Sann, 6-0, 6-4.

In the quarterfinals, the Ridgers defeated Verona, 4-1, May 16. Biancamano won at second singles, 6-1, 6-0; freshman Ethan Che won at third singles, 6-2, 6-1; seniors Connor Linehan and Alex Weissman won at first doubles, 5-7, 6-1, 10-2, and juniors Asher Segal and Nick Vecchione won at second doubles, 6-1, 6-1.

GRHS defeated 12th-seeded Johnson Regional, 4-1, in the semifinals on May 19 at Freeman Courts. Cotrone won, 6-0, 6-1, at first singles; Biancamano won, 6-3, 7-5, at second singles; Linehan and Weissman won, 6-7 (5-10), 6-4, 6-3, at first doubles and Segal and Vecchione won, 6-2, 6-1, at second doubles.

GRHS lost to Columbia, 5-0, May 20, at Freeman Courts in a Super Essex Conference-Liberty Division match.
