Glen Ridge HS field hockey team defeats Newark Academy to reach ECT quarterfinals

GLEN RIDGE, NJ (updated Tuesday Oct. 4, 12:52 p.m.) – Grace Twitchell notched a hat trick and added one assist to lead the Glen Ridge High School varsity field hockey team to a 5-2 win over Newark Academy in the first round of the Essex County Tournament on Saturday, Oct. 1.

Gretchen Gilmore had one goal and one assist; Maggie Krupinsky  had a goal and Maggie Smith had two assists for the fourth-seeded Ridgers, who won their second straight to improve to a 6-5 record. Newark Academy was seeded ninth. Sarah Looney and Sophia Thervil each had one assist.

The Ridgers were scheduled to host fifth-seeded Millburn in the ECT quarterfinals on Oct. 5. The winner will visit top-seeded West Essex in the semifinals on Saturday, Oct. 8, at 10 a.m.

In the previous game, Thervil had a goal and assisted on Smith’s goal to lead the Ridgers to a 2-1 win over Mount St. Dominic Academy on Sept. 29 at George Washington Avenue field.

Caroline Keavy had seven saves for GRHS.
