Glen Ridge HS football team blanks Newark Collegiate Academy, 26-0, in home opener for first win of season

GLEN RIDGE, NJ – The Glen Ridge High School varsity football team put up a dominant performance in its home opener.

Junior quarterback Tyler Liddy passed for 240 yards and two touchdowns, and senior lineman Quinlan Hood and senior linebacker Owen Fincher led a stout defense as the Ridgers shut out Newark Collegiate Academy, 26-0, Saturday, Sept. 17, at Hurrell Field in a North Jersey Super Football Conference non-division game.

The Ridgers moved to a 1-1 record.

Liddy hit senior split end Chris Harris on a 50-yard TD pass in the first quarter for a 6-0 lead.

Senior Matt Myles kicked a 25-yard field goal in the second quarter to make it 9-0 at the half.

In the third quarter, the Ridgers put the game away with two touchdowns and a safety.

Senior linebacker Nick Weber-Zazzu returned an interception 45 yards for a TD and Myles scored on the two-point conversion for a 17-0 lead. After the Ridgers recorded a safety, Fincher scored on a 68-yard TD pass from Liddy and Myles kicked the extra point.

Liddy completed 11 of 21 passes. Fincher, from his tight end position, finished with two catches for 112 yards; junior running back Avery Hackett had three catches for 31 yards; and running back Weber-Zazzu had two catches for 25 yards.

Junior running back Joe Marchesano rushed for 53 yards on 13 carries for the Ridgers.

Defensively, Hood had 10 tackles, including one sack; Fincher had nine tackles, including one sack; junior linebacker Max Auborn had eight tackles, including one sack; senior defensive back Tyler Grady and defensive back Hackett each had four tackles and one interception; defensive back Myles had seven tackles, including two sacks; and Weber-Zazzu had five tackles, including the interception for a TD.

The Ridgers will host Montclair Kimberley Academy on Saturday, Sept. 24, at 1 p.m. at Hurrell Field in a NJSFC non-division game.
