UPDATED: Glen Ridge HS football team falls to Weequahic to move to 4-2

NEWARK, NJ – (corrected Saturday Oct. 14, 11:15 p.m., updated Oct. 17, 1:05 p.m.) – The Glen Ridge High School varsity football team lost to Weequahic, 42-8, Friday night at Weequahic High School’s Untermann Field in Newark.

The Ridgers moved to a 4-2 record.

After a scoreless first quarter, Weequahic’s Robert Leverette scored the first of his four TDs, followed by Charles Bruton’s two-point conversion run, for an 8-0 lead in the second quarter.

The Ridgers responded when senior quarterback/co-captain Tyler LIddy hooked up with junior split end Tyler Strong on a 20-yard TD pass and senior running back/co-captain Joe Marchesano added the two-point conversion run to tie the score 8-8 at halftime.

But Weequahic scored two TDs in the third quarter and three in the fourth quarter.

Liddy finished 13 of 32 passing for 186 yards with the TD and without an interception.

Strong finished with four receptions for 32 yards and the TD. Junior split end Simon Low had three catches for 48 yards; senior tight end David Weissenberger had two catches for 68 yards; senior split end Jose McCallen-Villafane had two catches for 23 yards and rushed two times for 15 yards; and Marchesano had two catches for 15 yards and seven carries for 20 yards.

Defensively, senior linebacker/co-captain Max Auborn had 12 tackles with a sack; senior linebacker/co-captain Kieran Moran had nine tackles; Hackett had seven tackles as a DB; McCallen-Villafane had five tackles with two sacks and Marchesano had five tackles with a sack both as a DB.

Weequahic improved to 4-1.

The Ridgers will visit undefeated Shabazz on Friday, Oct. 20, at 7 p.m. at Shabazz Stadium in Newark.

Shabazz is 6-0.

GRHS is in fourth place with 59 points in the NJSIAA North Jersey Section 2, Group 1 power-point standings. Weequahic is third with 61 points, behind Belvidere with 62 points and first place Shabazz with 70 points.

The top eight teams through eight games earn North Jersey Section 2, Group 1 state playoff berths. Weequahic is the defending champion. Roselle Park is in fifth place with 54 points. The playoffs begin Nov. 10-11.

NOTE – The kickoff for the Immaculate Conception game at home has been changed to 2 p.m. due to ACT testing.
