Glen Ridge HS football team looks to regroup from loss in season opener; gears up for home opener

GLEN RIDGE, NJ – The Glen Ridge High School varsity football team will look to bounce back from its season-opening loss to Butler.

The Ridgers will host Newark Collegiate Academy Charter in its home opener this Saturday, Sept. 17 at 1 p.m. at Hurrell Field.

The Ridgers lost at Butler, 28-7, Friday, Sept. 9. GRHS took a 7-0 lead in the second quarter. GRHS junior running back Joe Marchesano fumbled the ball, but junior quarterback Tyler Liddy recovered it in the end zone. Senior Matt Myles kicked the extra point. But Butler overcame the Ridgers’ 7-0 halftime lead by scoring 13 points in the third quarter and 15 points in the fourth quarter.

Liddy completed 11 of 26 passes for 82 yards, and rushed eight times for 14 yards.

Rushing: Liddy, eight carries for 14 yards; junior running back Joe Marchesano, 10 carries for 44 yards; sophomore Tyler Strong, six carries for 21 yards; senior Chris Harris, one carry for eight yards; junior Avery Hackett, two carries for four yards; Myles, one carry for minus-10 yards.

Receiving: senior Chris Harris,  four catches for 29 yards; junior Jose McCallen-Villafene, three catches for  30 yards; senior Nick Weber-Zazzu, two catches for 14 yards; and Marchesano had two catches for nine yards.

Defense: senior linebacker Owen Fincher, 15 tackles and one fumble recovery; junior linebacker Max Auborn, 11 tackles with one sack; senior lineman Quinlan Hood, 12 tackles; junior cornerback Avery Hackett, 11 tackles; and strong safety Weber-Zazzu had 10 tackles and one interception.
