GLEN RIDGE, NJ – Junior tri-captain Claire McMahon scored 15 points to lead the 10th-seeded Glen Ridge High School girls’ varsity basketball team to a 36-31 double-overtime upset win at seventh-seeded Weehawken in the first round of the NJSIAA North Jersey Section 2, Group 1 state tournament on Monday, Feb. 26.
The game was tied 27-27 at the end of regulation. Both teams didn’t score in the first overtime before Glen Ridge outscored Weehawken, 9-4, in the second overtime.
Junior tri-captain Jenny Lisovicz had nine points; senior tri-captain Lindsay Jaiyesimi had five; sophomores Sarah Cullinan and Haleigh Pine each had three and sophomore Michaela Dowd added a free throw for the Ridgers, who improved to 15-10. GRHS will visit Dayton on Feb. 28 in the quarterfinals in Springfield at 7 p.m. The winner will face the winner of third-seeded Secaucus and sixth-seeded Hoboken in the semifinals on March 2. The final is March 5.
In earlier action, McMahon scored 19 points in a 40-34 home win over Brearley on Feb. 21. Lisovicz had 10 points; Jaiyesimi had six and Dowd added two.
GRHS bounced back from a 3-6 start to the season. The Ridgers won six games in a row in the middle of the season. The win streak ended with a loss to second-seeded Newark Tech in the Essex County Tournament first round.
