GLEN RIDGE, NJ – The Glen Ridge High School girls’ varsity soccer team will gear up for the postseason next week.
The Lady Ridgers, under 16th-year head coach Oscar Viteri, are the four-time defending state North Jersey Section 2, Group 1 tournament champions. Last season, the Ridgers finished as state Group 1 runner-up.
The eighth-seeded Ridgers lost to top-seeded and unbeaten Livingston in a 1-0 heartbreaker in the Essex County Tournament quarterfinals on Saturday, Oct. 22, in Livingston. Livingston scored in the seventh minute when Christine Craitar converted a rebound of a shot from Tori Belcuore.
Junior goalkeeper Victoria Woznick made seven saves for the Ridgers, who had their four-game winning streak snapped. Livingston moved to a 13-0-1 record. It was the second time the Ridgers lost to Livingston by a 1-0 score this season. The first was on Sept. 21 in Livingston in a Super Essex Conference-American Division game.
GRHS defeated Midland Park, 3-1, Oct. 24, in Midland Park to move toa 10-6-1 record. Freshman midfielder Tara Feenaghty, Junior forward Lindsey Jaiyesimi and senior forward Leslie Jaiyesimi each had a goal; Senior midfielder Merritt Davie, senior midfielder Colleen Grady and sophomore midfielder Jenny Lisovicz each had an asssist and Woznick made five saves.
In previous play, senior back Katie Liu scored the game-winning goal in overtime on an assist from senior back Galen Lew to lift the Ridgers to a 3-2 win over ninth-seeded Millburn in the first round of the Essex County Tournament on Oct. 19 at Watsessing Park.
Leslie Jaiyesimi scored on an assist from junior midfielder Liz Hauschild, and Lew scored on an assist from senior back Meghan Marhan for GRHS.
The Ridgers will visit Pingry in Martinsville on Oct. 27 in the final regular-season game at 4 p.m.
