GLEN RIDGE – Senior forward Tomison Kennedy scored on a header off a corner kick from junior midfielder Colleen Grady in the 37th minute of the first half to lift the Glen Ridge High School girls’ varsity soccer team to a 1-0 win over Kinnelon in the state Group 1 semifinals at Millburn High School on Tuesday night, Nov. 17.
The Ridgers, who improved to 17-5-1 and avenged last year’s loss to Kinnelon in the state Group 1 semifinals, will play in the state Group 1 championship game on Saturday, Nov. 21, at Kean University at 10 a.m. against either Shore Regional or Haddon Heights.
The Ridgers’ defense was sparked by junior back Galen Lew, junior midfielder Olivia Schwern, senior back Emily Gill and junior back Meghan Marhan as they helped shut down Kinnelon, the defending state Group 1 champion.
GRHS, which won its fourth straight North Jersey Section 2, Group 1 tournament title, is seeking its third state Group 1 title in four seasons. GRHS beat Shore, 2-0, in the 2012 final. GRHS and Shore tied 1-1 in the 2013 final.
