GLEN RIDGE, NJ – The third-seeded Glen Ridge High School varsity girls’ tennis team defeated 14th-seeded Newark Shabazz, 5-0, in the first round of the NJSIAA North Jersey Section 2, Group 1 state tournament on Oct. 5 at Freeman Courts. Julia Baione, Michaela Dowd and Elizabeth Yewaisis won at first, second and third singles, respectively, all by 6-0, 6-0 scores. Colleen Murphy and Hayleigh Pine won at second doubles, 6-0, 6-1. The first doubles team won by forfeit.
The Ridgers, who improved to a 5-9 record, were scheduled to host sixth-seeded Leonia in the quarterfinals Oct. 10. The winner will face the winner between No. 2 seed Verona and No. 7 seed Dayton in the semifinals on Oct. 13. The final is Oct. 17.
