Top-seeded Glen Ridge HS boys’ basketball team will host Newark Shabazz in section semifinals

GLEN RIDGE, NJ (updated Friday March 3, 10:09 a.m.) – The top-seeded Glen Ridge High School boys’ varsity basketball team will host 12th-seeded Newark Shabazz in the semifinals of the NJSIAA North Jersey Section 2, Group 1 state tournament on Saturday, March 4, at 3 p.m.

Tyler Liddy scored 13 points and fellow junior Avery Hackett had eight points to lead the Ridgers to a 56-31 home win over eighth-seeded Newark Collegiate Academy in the quarterfinals on March 2.

Senior Charlie DeLuca had seven points; sophomore Liam Gunnarsson, senior Max Thompson and junior David Weissenberger each had six points; senior Ryan Liddy and freshman Joe DeLuca each had two points and sophomore Simon Low added a free throw for the Ridgers, who won their seventh straight game to improve to a 22-5 record.

The other semifinal pits seventh-seeded Newark University at third-seeded Hoboken. The final is Monday, March 6.

University upset second-seeded Weequahic in the quarterfinals. Weequahic defeated Glen Ridge in both Super Essex Conference-Freedom Division meetings this season. It marked the Ridgers’ only divisional losses. Weequahic won the division title. Glen Ridge finished second in the division.

Shabazz is 11-13 on the season.
