GLEN RIDGE, NJ – The Verona/Glen Ridge high school varsity ice hockey team had a great showing at the Essex County Holiday Tournament held at Richard J. Codey Arena in West Orange.
The Hillbillies/Ridgers went 2-0-1 in the tournament to finish in a second-place tie with Madison in the “A” Division of the tournament, beating Watchung Hills and Old Tappan and tying West Morris to move to a 6-4-2 overall record on the season. Millburn finished first with 13.5 points in the team standings. Verona/GR and Madison each had 10 points.
GR junior Noah Martinez had a goal and an assist and Verona senior Jarrod Keating and GR freshman Zach Gold each scored in the 3-2 win over Watchung Hills on Dec. 26. Verona sophomore Jack Lonsinger had an assist and GR junior Chris Kostas made 17 saves.
Keating had two goals and one assist and GR junior Jeff Egan had two goals in the 6-3 win over Old Tappan on Dec. 28. Verona sophomore Vincent Eremita had a goal and an assist; Martinez had a goal; and Gold and GR junior Alec Vecchione each had one assist. Kostas made 18 saves.
Keating’s second goal of the game staked Verona/GR to a 2-2 with West Morris on Dec. 30. Gold had an assist and GR sophomore Keith Juros made eight saves.
In earlier action, Egan scored two goals and Martinez had one goal to lead Verona/Glen Ridge to a 3-2 win over Johnson on Dec. 19. GR freshman Nolan Campbell, Eremita, Keating and Vecchione each had an assist. Kostas made 23 saves.
GR senior Andrew Martell had two goals and Keating had one goal and assisted on both of Martell’s goals in the 3-0 win over Cranford on Dec. 22 at Codey Arena. Kostas made 22 saves for the shutout.
