The Verona/Glen Ridge high school ice hockey team, seeded third, enjoyed a fine run in the Kelly Cup playoffs at Richard J. Codey Arena in West Orange.
The team defeated sixth-seeded Johnson Regional, 9-1, in the quarterfinal round Feb. 10.
GR senior Anton Martino and GR sophomore Chandler Otterbein each had two goals; GR sophomore Armaan Rigby had one goal and two assists; and GR sophomores Jeff Egan,Jack Stocker, and Aidan Brennan each had one assist. GR senior Colin Gilmore made 11 saves and GR sophomores Chris Kostas made two saves.
Verona/Glen Ridge fell to second-seeded Millburn, 6-1, in the semifinals Feb. 12, ending its five-game unbeaten streak to move to a 14-4-7 record. Rigby scored the goal. Verona/Glen Ridge tied Millburn, 2-2, and lost to Millburn, 3-1, in two straight games before the unbeaten streak.
