GLEN RIDGE – The Verona/Glen Ridge high school varsity ice hockey team won five straight to improve to a 7-4-1 record through Jan. 2.
Verona/Glen Ridge won all three of its games in the Essex County Holiday Tournament at Richard J. Codey Arena, beating St. Rose, Passaic Valley and Mountain Lakes.
Verona/GR scored three goals to take a 3-0 lead at the end of the first period en route to a 3-1 win over St. Rose on Dec. 26. Glen Ridge senior Owen Gleeson had two goals and one assist; Glen Ridge freshman Jake Kuhn had one goal and Glen Ridge sophomore Anton Martino and Glen Ridge junior Steven Topping each had one assist. Verona senior Liam Blaney made 45 saves.
Verona senior Kevin White had a hat trick; and Verona sophomore Sean DeCandia and Verona freshman Jarrod Keating each had a goal in the 5-3 win over Passaic Valley on Dec. 27. Gleeson and Glen Ridge senior captain Steven Wenzl each had two assists; and Topping, Verona junior Doug Spardel and Kuhn each had one assist. Blaney made 19 saves.
Wenzl had two goals and two assists; Kuhn scored twice and Topping posted three assists in the 6-0 win over Mountain Lakes on Dec. 29. White had one goal and one assist; Martino had one goal and Keating had two assists. Blaney had 15 saves and Glen Ridge sophomore Colin Gilmore made five saves.
White had two goals and one assist and Kuhn had a goal in the 3-0 win over Mountain Lakes on Jan. 2 at Aspen Ice Arena in Randolph. Gleeson had two assists and Keating had one assist. Blaney made 15 saves for the shutout.
Verona/GR defeated Pequannock, 10-0, Dec. 20 to begin the win streak.
