Irvington-based Jersey Heat Track Club gears up for Indoor National Championships in Staten Island, N.Y.

IRVINGTON – From Friday and Sunday, March 11-13, 11 members of the Irvington-based Jersey Heat Track Club will be competing in the 2016 USATF Hershey Youth Indoor National Championships being contested at the Ocean Breeze Sports Complex in Staten Island, N.Y. This fantastic group of student-athletes will be contesting 22 individual events and three relays in effort to achieve personal-best performances and possibly come home with the recognition of being in the top six in the nation.

Competing at the Indoor National meet will be Florence Avenue Elementary School (Irvington) fourth-grader Jamir Brown; Great Oaks Charter School (Newark) eighth-graders Ja’Nay Brown, Jaziah Hayes, Anaiya Puryear and La’Miyya Sterling; Essex County Vocational Schools – Newark Tech Campus junior Chuckie Moses, II; and Irvington High School students – freshman  Sebastin Val, sophomores  Nehemie Estil Duprevil, Marvin Val, Terrell Williams and senior  Craig Bradley.  

As a tune-up, the JHTC athletes competed in the National Youth Preview meet on Sunday, March 4, contested at the Ocean Breeze Sports Complex at which they finished in the top three in 18 out of the 22 total events that they contested. Both Jamir and Ja’Nay left the meet with two first-place finishes. Terrell and Craig each left the meet with a first- and second-place finish. Sebastin left the meet with one first-place finish.  Chuckie left the meet with two second-place finishes.  Nehemie and Marvin each left with one second-place finish. Jaziah and La’Miyya each left the meet with a second- and third-place finish. And Anaiya, in her first-ever competition, left the meet with a third-place finish.  

The upcoming USATF Hershey Youth Indoor National Meet will be the last meet of the 2015-2016 indoor competition season. The team is tentatively scheduled to open up the 2016 outdoor competition season on Sunday, April 3,  at the Quiet Storm Youth Developmental meet being contested at Malcolm X Shabazz Field in Newark.
