IRVINGTON, NJ – The Irvington High School varsity baseball team, under head coach Troy Bowers, has made good strides this season.

The Blue Knights defeated Weequahic and East Orange and lost to Orange and Central.

“This year we have a mixture of returning players and players new to the game,” said Bowers, a IHS graduate, Class of 1987, who was a standout baseball player for the Blue Knights. “Some of the players have laced up the cleats and put on a baseball glove for the very first time; not ideal for competition, but the focus has to be, at least for our program, teaching the fundamentals of baseball with the absence of a feeder program.

“I am happy to advise that this year we have introduced middle school baseball programs to University Middle and Union Avenue Schools,” added Bowers. “This will undoubtedly help new players with learning the fundamentals of the game and give them exposure to the sport prior to entering high school.”

Bowers said the goals for the season are to compete in the Super Essex Conference-Independence Division while working on the fundamental aspects of the game.
