UPDATE: Irvington HS boys’ basketball team comeback falls short

IRVINGTON – The Irvington High School boys’ varsity basketball team rallied in the fourth quarter to force overtime, but the comeback fell short as it lost to American History, 58-57, Jan. 28, at home.

The Blue Knights trailed 39-30 at the end of the third quarter, but outscored American History, 20-10, in the fourth quarter to tie it 50-50. American History outscored IHS, 8-7, in overtime.

Othniel Nyameke had 17 points; Ijah Jones had 14 and Talik Lee had eight for the Blue Knights, who lost their ninth straight game to move to a 2-11 record.

In previous action, the Blue Knights lost to Newark East Side, 67-56, Jan. 19 at home.

IHS fell to North 13th Street Tech, 60-50, Jan. 22, at home. Nyameke had 18 points and Lee had 15 for the Blue Knights. Ijah Jones had five points, Aasad Lawrence had four points, Nasir Johnson and Ahmere Nelson each had three points and Marquise Pierce had two.

The Blue Knights received the No. 20 seed in the 70th Essex County Tournament and will visit No. 25 seed Cedar Grove in the second preliminary round on or by Feb. 6. The winner will advance to the third preliminary round on or by Feb. 11 against the winner between No. 13 seed Newark Tech and No. 32 seed Technology.
