Irvington HS boys’ basketball team defeats Nutley to advance to state tournament quarterfinals

IRVINGTON, NJ – Karriem Thomas scored 14 points, including making four three-pointers, and Kevin Kirkpatrick had 10 points and 12 rebounds to lead the fifth-seeded Irvington High School boys’ varsity basketball team to a 75-45 home win over No. 12 seed Nutley in the first round of the NJSIAA North Jersey Section 2, Group 3 state tournament on Monday, Feb. 26.

Andrew Sylvestre had 13 points; Kymani Dunbar had eight points and seven rebounds; Jiair Bucknor scored eight; Jasiah Provilon notched six points and six rebounds; Nasamier Brooks had six points; Dezlyn Sebastien and Moses Pierre each had four points; and Dameer Vital added two points for IHS, which improved to a 16-10 record.

The Blue Knights were scheduled to host No. 13 seed Parsippany Hills in the quarterfinals on Feb. 28. The winner will face the winner of No. 1 seed Rahway and No. 8 seed Colonia in the semifinals on March 2.

In earlier action, the Blue Knights defeated Newark Collegiate Academy, 67-43, Feb. 21, at home. Dunbar had 11 points, 11 rebounds, three assists and two steals; Thomas had 12 points and three assists; Brooks posted nine points; Sebastien collected six points, six rebounds and five assists; and Sylvestre, Vital, Kirkpatrick, Zaire Head and Jalen Scott each had four points.
