IRVINGTON, – The Irvington High School boys’ indoor track and field team enjoyed an impressive showing at the Essex County Relays Championships on Jan. 2 at the Ocean Breeze Complex in Staten Island, N.Y.
The Blue Knights finished in fourth place with 20 points in the team standings about the 27 schools. St. Benedict’s Prep won the team title with 70 points.
The sprint medley team finished second in 3:37.1. Junior Dwight Henry, sophomore Mattias Litus, sophomore Devin Seward, and senior Desmond Marfo comprised that team.
Marfo, senior Cordel Litus, Matthias Litus, and jSeward finished fourth in the 4×400-meter relay in 3:34.9.
Henry, Cordel Litus, junior Emmanuel Abarah and Matthias Litus took third in the shuttle hurdles in 33.45.
Henry, Seward, Marfo and Mathias Litus took fifth in the 4×200 in 1:35.38.
The IHS girls’ team finished 13th in the team standings. Senior Andrea Jackson, freshman Irvlana Nichols, freshman Funmi Olukoya, and junior Melissa Vilius took fourth in the shuttle hurdle relays in 36.78.
Villius and junior Taliyah Hayes each leaped 4 feet-4 inches to finish sixth in the team high jump.
West Orange won the girls’ team title.
IHS head coach Marvin Hawkins was proud of his teams.
“We performed better as a team and brought home 22 medals,” Hawkins said.
The boys’ sprint medley relay team qualified for the New Balance Indoor Nationals, which will be held 168th St. Armory in New York City, March 8-10.
