IRVINGTON, NJ – For the first time since 2005, Irvington High School has a competitive cheerleading squad.
Under head coach Valeria Brown-Garner, the team competed at the Holiday Cheer competition held at the Dunn Center in Elizabeth on Dec. 8.
The team earned second place in the varsity co-ed category.
The event was an official qualifier for the Garden State Cheerleading Championships on Feb. 9 in Lincroft. With a second- place finish, the team automatically qualifies.
In addition to the Feb. 9 competition, the team will also compete in the following events this year:
- Snow Globe Shake, Jan. 12, in Montvale
- Ice Breaker Challenge, Feb. 23, in Elizabeth
- Shamrock Showdown, March 24, in Timber Creek
The IHS squad has 18 girls and one boy.
The assistant coach is Gail Lane and the volunteer coach is Rayo Okubanjo.
