Irvington HS cross-country teams give good efforts at SEC Championships meet

The Irvington High School cross-country teams gave solid efforts at the Super Essex Conference-Liberty Division Championships held at Branch Brook Park in Newark on Oct. 3.

In the girls’ team standings, Irvington finished fourth overall. On the boys’ side, the Blue Knights finished eighth in the team standings.

IHS boys’ and girls’ head coach Marvin Hawkins was proud of his teams’ performances.

“The Lady (Blue) Knights have been improving each week and finally broke out with good performances as a team with each girl running their personal bests,” Hawkins said.

The IHS girls’ runners were sophomore Cathiana Jean, third place overall, 22:08; Adijat Oyeleke, fifth place, 22:28; sophomore Taliyah Hayes, 18th place, 23:14; freshman Ariana Ruiz, 38th place, 27:20; sophomore Berline Julien, 39th plae, 27:23; and senior Maxine Hayes, 56th place, 30:34.

The boys were led by junior Desmond Marfo, fourth place overall, 17:55; and senior Michael Veltz, ninth place; 18:55, who had personal bests.
