Irvington HS football team (6-0) stays perfect with convincing win over previously-undefeated Wayne Valley, 52-25

IRVINGTON – The Irvington High School varsity football team more than just aced its biggest test of the season.

The Blue Knights delivered a powerful statement that they are legitimate contenders for conference and state sectional championships. And if they can achieve the latter goal, it will be the first time in their history.

In a battle of unbeatens, the Blue Knights outlasted Wayne Valley, 52-25, Saturday, Oct. 15, at the IHS Sports Complex in a North Jersey Super Football Conference Freedom White Division game.

The victory improved the Blue Knights to 6-0 overall and 2-0 in the division, while Wayne Valley dropped to 6-1 overall, 1-1 in the division.

First-year head coach Ashley PIerre’s squad also gained plenty of power points in the New Jersey State Interscholastic Athletic Association North Jersey Section 1, Group 4 playoff standings. The Blue Knights moved to Section 1, Group 4 this season, and could meet Wayne Valley again in the sectional playoffs.

IHS senior quarterback Jyvon Brown passed for three touchdowns and ran for another and senior running back Al-Nazir Blackman scored on three touchdown runs for the Blue Knights.

Wayne Valley scored on the opening drive of the game when Nick Gould ran for a one-yard touchdown for a 7-0 lead.

The Blue Knights scored two unanswered touchdowns. Blackman had a one-yard touchdown run and Brown threw a six-yard touchdown pass to sophomore tight end Nashawn Brooks to put the Blue Knights ahead,12-7, at the end of the first quarter.

Senior running back Joe Scancarella scored on a 51-yard pass from senior quarterback Grant Ferrauilo in the second quarter to give Wayne Valley a 13-12 lead. The extra-point kick was blocked.

But the Blue Knights regained control. Blackman burst for a 61-yard touchdown run and Brown added the two-point conversion run as the Blue Knights took the lead to stay, 20-12. Brown hit senior receiver James Ely in the end zone for a 24-yard touchdown as the Blue Knights extended it to 26-12.

Ferrauilo threw a nine-yard touchdown pass to Scancarella to cut it to 26-19.

Brown then scored on a one-yard sneak on the final play from scrimmage of the half for a 32-19 halftime lead.

Junior running back Mu’adh Nim Abdul-Salaam ran for a 13-yard touchdown and junior Jasiah Provillon scored on the two-point conversion run to stretch it to 40-19 in the third quarter.

Ferrauilo hit junior AJ Tedesco for a seven-yard touchdown later in the third quarter.

In the fourth quarter, Blackman scored on a 57-yard run and Brown threw a 16-yard touchdown pass to Ely.

Next game: The Blue Knights will visit Belleville on Friday, Oct. 12, at 7 p.m. in a divisional game. Belleville has lost three straight to move to 3-4.
