IRVINGTON, NJ – The Irvington High School varsity football team traveled down to Smyrna, Del. on Friday night, Sept. 22, losing to Smyrna HS, 30-18.
It was the Blue Knights’ first loss of the season, moving their record to 2-1.
Smyrna broke a scoreless tie with 24 seconds left in the second quarter with a touchdown and two-point conversion.
Smyrna scored a TD and made the two-point conversion with 5:46 left in the third quarter for a 16-0 lead. Smyrna scored on an 86-yard TD pass play in which the ball was bounced off a Smyrna player’s hands and caught mid-air by another Smyrna player.
The Blue Knights got on the scoreboard when senior quarterback Brandon Robinson threw a 47-yard TD pass to senior receiver Jasiah Provillon with 2:59 left in the third quarter to cut it to 22-6. Robinson threw a TD pass to sophomore Taiyon Battle to narrow the deficit to 22-12 with 10:55 left in the fourth quarter.
Smyrna stopped the Blue Knights’ momentum with a 33-yard interception return for a TD with 3:17 left, followed by the two-point conversion, to extend it to 30-12.
Robinson connected with senior Darryl Hill for his third TD pass of the game with 43 seconds remaining to produce the final score.
The Blue Knights will look to bounce back from the loss when they take on Nutley on Saturday, Sept. 30, at Nutley’s Park Oval at 1 p.m.
At the Oct. 6 home game vs. Millburn, the Irvington Board of Education and IHS football team will honor the police and firefighters who service the Irvington community. At halftime, the Irvington Police and Fire Departments will walk onto the football field and be honored for the exemplary sacrifices they make for Irvington. All first responders will have free entry into the game.
