IRVINGTON, NJ – The Irvington High School varsity football team rallied to beat previously-unbeaten North Bergen, 41-20, Friday night, Oct. 5, at home to even its record to 3-3 on the season.
Trailing 20-7 at halftime, the Blue Knights shut out North Bergen in the second half.
Junior Zakee Swann scored three touchdowns to lift the Blue Knights.
Sophomore Zahir Salaam scored on a 10-yard touchdown run with 9:31 left in the third quarter to cut it to 20-13. The extra point failed.
Swann scored on a 39-yard TD pass from junior quarterback Taiyon Battle to tie the game 20-20 with one second left in the third quarter. Junior Clervency Prince kicked the extra point.
In the fourth quarter, Swann scored on a 62-yard run and Prince added the extra point to give the Blue Knights a 27-20 lead with 8:47 remaining.
Swann ran for a 30-yard TD and Prince kicked the point-after with 5:22 remaining to make it 34-20.
Junior Tyrell Edwards returned an interception 5 yards for a touchdown with 2:03 left and Prince added the extra point to close out the scoring.
North Bergen led 14-0 at the end of the first quarter.
In the second quarter, Swann scored on a 6-yard run and Prince kicked the extra point to cut it to 14-7. North Bergen answered with a TD for a 20-7 halftime lead.
North Bergen fell to 4-1.
The Blue Knights will visit Ferris on Oct. 13 at Caven Point in Jersey City at 1 p.m.
Ferris is 0-5.
