Irvington HS football team rolls past West Orange, 22-3, in home opener to improve to 2-0

IRVINGTON, NJ – The Irvington High School varsity football team dominated from the start in its home opener.

Junior running back/linebacker/strong safety Muadh “Nim” Abdus-Salaam rushed for 120 yards and a touchdown on 21 carries and recorded six tackles, including two for loss; and senior tight end/linebacker Tyhmir Lassiter and senior quarterback/defensive back Jyvon “Silky” Brown scored on defensive touchdowns to lead the Blue Knights to an emphatic 22-3 win over West Orange HS on Friday, Sept. 16, at the IHS Sports Complex in a North Jersey Super Football Conference non-division game. The Blue Knights, under first-year head coach Ashley Pierre, remained undefeated at 2-0.

In the first quarter, Lassiter forced a West Orange fumble. Senior lineman Nelson Gedeon recovered the fumble and returned it 50 yards for a touchdown for a 6-0 lead. The extra-point failed.

West Orange answered with a field goal later in the first quarter to cut it to 6-3.

In the second quarter, a West Orange high snap went out of the end zone for a safety, giving the Blue Knights an 8-3 lead.

Abdus-Salaam scored on a 32-yard TD run in the fourth quarter to extend the Blue Knights’ lead to 14-3. The extra-point failed.

Brown then intercepted a pass and returned it 57 yards for a TD. Abdus-Salaam scored on the two-point conversion to end the scoring.

Lassiter finished with 11 tackles, including two for loss, one sack and the forced fumble. Gedeon finished with eight tackles, including four for loss, one sack, a forced fumble, and two fumble recoveries.

Brown had four tackles and the interception for a TD.

Junior receiver/defensive back Josiah Provillon had six catches for 117 yards and recorded four tackles. Provillon also returned three kickoffs for 108 yards.

Junior defensive back/receiver Jason Antwi had three tackles.

Next game: The Blue Knights will host Barringer on Friday, Sept. 23, at 7 p.m. in a NJSFC non-division game in a matchup of 2-0 teams.
