IRVINGTON – The Irvington High School varsity football team defeated Passaic Valley, 33-20, on Homecoming Day at the IHS Sports Complex on Saturday afternoon, Oct. 29, to remain perfect on the season. The victory improved the Blue Knights’ record to 8-0.
The win also sets up a showdown with Wayne Hills on Friday, Nov. 4, at Wayne Hills to decide the inaugural North Jersey Super Football Conference-Freedom White Division championship. Wayne Hills rallied to beat town rival Wayne Valley, 25-24, Friday, Oct. 28, to improved to 7-1 overall.
The IHS Blue Knights are 4-0 while Wayne Hills is 3-0 in the division. Wayne Hills technically is 4-0 since Belleville and Wayne HIlls mutually decided not to play each other in a divisional game.
The Blue Knights and Wayne Hills also could meet in the state North Jersey Section 1, Group 4 playoff championship game. Their game won’t count when it comes to the playoff power-points standings. That’s because the playoffs are based on the top eight teams in the standings through eight games. Wayne Hills is in first place with 160 points and Irvington is in second place with 149 points.
In the win over Passaic Valley, quarterback Jyvon Brown passed for 204 yards with four touchdowns and two interceptions, competing 12 of 19 attempts, and rushed for another 72 yards on 11 carries. Brown also returned an interception for 40 yards on defense.
Jasiah Provillon had six receptions for 112 yards and a touchdown; Karon Gray had three receptions, two for touchdowns, and 61 yards; and Nelson Gedeon had a 25-yard touchdown catch.
Defensively, Nim Salaam had eight tackles, three for loss, and one pass breakup; Thymir Lassiter had 11 tackles with three for loss; Jason Antwi had seven tackles, one pass breakup and one interception; Nashawn Brooks had seven tackles and one blocked field-goal attempt; and Chazz Perez posted 10 tackles with two for loss and one forced fumble.
