IRVINGTON, NJ – The Irvington High School girls’ varsity basketball team went 3-0 last week to extend its winning streak to six games and improve to 9-3 overall and 7-0 in the Super Essex Conference-Freedom Division.
Tiara Mahorn had 21 points, six steals and four assists and fellow senior Briana Lee had 17 points, 17 points and 10 steals to lead the Blue Knights to a 53-51 road win over Newark Collegiate Academy in a SEC crossover game, Jan. 21. Junior Aniyah Massey also had 15 points.
Lee had 25 points, 10 assists, eight rebounds and five blocks and Mahorn also had 25 points with eight assists, eight steals and six rebounds to power Irvington to a 67-24 win at Cristo Rey in Newark, Jan. 22 in a divisional game. Massey had nine points and eight rebounds and junior Celine Ceasar had six points and four rebounds.
Lee and Mahorn each scored 30 points and both had triple-doubles in the 74-30 divisional win over North Star Academy, Jan. 24 at home. Lee had 14 rebounds and 11 steals for a triple-double, while Mahorn had 12 assists and 11 steals. Ceasar had eight points, five rebounds, two assists and two steals; senior Herbina Exume had two points, seven rebounds and two blocks; and seniors Jenneha Lowe and Rayna Smith each had two points and two rebounds.
IHS hopes to gain a high seed in the 45th Essex County Tournament. The seeding meeting was scheduled for Jan. 28. The brackets will be released Jan. 29.
