Irvington HS girls’ basketball team falls in state tourney opener to end solid 16-10 season

IRVINGTON – The Irvington High School girls’ varsity basketball team, seeded 14th, lost at third-seeded West Morris, 51-30, in the first round of the state North Jersey Section 2, Group 3 tournament on Monday, Feb. 29, in Long Valley.

Jessica Washington had 15 points; Rhoda Agyemang had seven points; and Atonie Johnson and Jasmine Williams each had four points for IHS, which had its eight-game winning streak snapped.

The Blue Knights, under head coach Rashawnah French, finished the season with a successful 16-10 record.

In previous action, Washington scored 28 points and Williams had nine points in the 51-19 home win over North Arlington on Friday, Feb. 26. Johnson had four points; Agyemang and Nyoka McKnight each had three; Tiffany Terrell had two and Jakiyah Martin and Faith Northern each added one.

IHS defeated St. Vincent, 51-30, Saturday, Feb. 27, at home. McKnight had 10 points; Washington had nine; Colette Meremikwu had eight; Johnson had seven; Northern had five; Agyemang and Martin each had four; and Williams added two.
