Irvington HS girls’ basketball team tops Central to advance in ECT

IRVINGTON – The 18th-seeded Irvington High School girls’ varsity basketball team defeated No. 27 seed Central, 47-19, Feb. 6 in the first preliminary round of the Essex County Tournament at IHS.

The Blue Knights snapped a two-game losing streak and improved to a 7-8 record.

IHS was scheduled to visit 15th-seeded Mount Saint Dominic Academy in the second preliminary round on Feb. 9. The winner will visit No. 2 seed Newark Academy in the first round on Feb. 13.

In previous action, Jessica Washington scored 14 points and Jasmine Williams had 13 points and 11 rebounds in a 44-34 loss at Bloomfield on Feb. 2.

Jakiyah Martin had four points and Atonie Johnson had two points and 10 rebounds.

The Blue Knights lost a tough 32-27 decision at Verona on Feb. 4. Williams had 11 points and Washington had 10. IHS outscored Verona, 12-6, in the third quarter to take a 21-20 lead, but Verona answered with a 12-6 fourth quarter.
