IRVINGTON, NJ – A young Irvington High School girls’ track and field team had a surprisingly strong showing at the Bulldog Relays at Malcolm X Shabazz High School Stadium in Newark on Saturday, April 22. Irvington finished in fourth place in a field of 14 teams. North Bergen High School won the team title.
The IHS girls’ team overall won 28 medals in seven events. The team was led by junior Vicky Molokwu, sophomores Andrea Jackson, Deja Bethea and Rayna Smith, senior Anathalie Thelemaque, and freshmen Erica Richards and Taliyah Hayes. The team medaled in the following events:
400m Hurdle Relay:
First Place
Distance Medley Relay: Fourth place
Shuttle Hurdle Relay: Third Place
3,200m Relay: Third Place
800m Relay: Sixth Place
Sprint Medley Relay: Second Place
1,600m Relay: Fourth Place
The young ladies mentioned above led the way in the sprint and hurdle events. Senior LaShanna James, freshmen Berline Julien and Oyeleke Adijats, and juniors Khadeejah Hughes and Jada Bozeman led the way in the distance events.
In other track activities, on May 4, Irvington lost to a good Bloomfield High School at a tri-dual and rebounded with a victory over Belleville High School.
The current girls’ dual meet record is 4-3. The team is looking for a strong showing in the upcoming meets against West Essex and North 13th Street High Schools the next two weeks to finished the dual meet season.
