IRVINGTON – The Irvington High School boys’ and girls’ indoor track and field teams had a promising season.

Sophomore Michael Veltz ran 2:07 in the 800-meters and 53.8 in the 400-meters in his first year of competition.

Senior Johnathan Carlon ran 6.87 in the 55-meters and placed sixth in the Super Essex Conference and state North Jersey Section 2, Group 3. Carlon then took 21st with a time of 7.10 in the 55-meter dash at the state Group 3 meet. He came into the meet ranked 24th in Group 3.

Senior Craig Bradley ran 6.9 in the 55-meters and placed seventh in the state sectional.

Senior Quadri Shannon ran 6.9 in the 55-meters placed ninth in the state sectional.

Senior Brandon Moreno ran 55 in the 400-meters.

Sophomore Tavaughn Whyte ran 8.6 in the 55-meter hurdles.

Senior Mahogany Bass ran 7.7 in the 55-meters, 69 in the 400-meters, and 2:52 in the 800-meters. Bass had a good all-around indoor season and was clearly the best runner for the Lady Knights, said IHS head coach Marvin Hawkins.

Freshman Andrea Jackson ran 8.4 in the 55-meters and 31 in the 200-meters. She has the ability to become a top sprinter/hurdler, said Hawkins.

Overall, Hawkins was pleased with the boys’ and girls’ performances this season.

“The goal in the beginning of the season was to rebuild the team to its past glory. Even though the process has been slow, there is hope for the present and future.”
