IRVINGTON – The Irvington High School boys’ and girls’ track and field teams brought home more than 60 medals from the Bulldog Relays at Shabazz Stadium in Newark on Saturday, April 23.
IHS boys medal winners:
Shuttle Hurdle Relay, third place, James Ely, Jason Cills, Delon Prince, and Da’John Graves
4×800-meter relay, fifth place, Brandon Moreno, Godson Raymond, Khalyfe Joyner, and Trey Burwerl.
Distance medley relay, fifth place, Moreno, Jaevon Blackmon, Godson Raymond, and Sebastin Val.
Discus relay, second place, Craig Bradley and Deja Grier.
Shot put relay, third place, Grier and Nelson Cheridor.
Triple jump relay, third place, Ely and Graves.
Sprint medley relay, third place, Quadri Shannon, Graves, Moreno, and Raymond.
800-meter sprint medley relay, third place, 1:41.08, Al’Nazir Blackmon, Charles Felton-Golden, Bradley, and Cills
IHS boys’ head coach Marvin Hawkins’ notes: The 800-meter sprint medley team qualified for the New Balance Outdoor Nationals, which will be held at the University of North Carolina A&T in Greensboro, N.C., June 17-19.
Meanwhile, the IHS girls’ track and field team, under head coach Barnes Reid, had a redeeming week. After a loss to West Orange on April 19, 105-17, the girls redeemed themselves with a victory against Mount Saint Dominic Academy, 75-53, on the same date from the tri-dual meet and excellent performances over this past weekend. Freshman Andrea Jackson, along with others, paved the way for victory against Mount Saint Dominic. Jackson won the 100-meter hurdles, 400 hurdles and triple jump. Senior Atonie Johnson won the 100- and 200-meter dashes. Freshman Deja Bethea won the long jump and sophomore Jada Boseman won the 3,200-meter run.
Senior Jasmine Williams won the shot and discus.
The team’s dual meet record is 3-3 with Millburn High as the last dual meet for the season on April 26. The team’s record is a big improvement from last year’s 1-5 finish.
At the Bulldog Relays at Shabazz High School on Saturday, April 23, the IHS girls won 35 medals and finished a surprising fourth place in the team scoring. The girls were led by junior La Shanna James and Boseman in the distance relays. In the sprint relays, IHS was led by Jackson, sophomore Richele De Los Santos and junior Anathalie Thelemaque. In the jumps, senior Mical Ceus, senior Neandra Shury, Bethea and Jackson scored big for the Blue Knights.
