IRVINGTON, NJ – The Irvington High School wrestling team captured the NJ Urban Wrestling League Championship-Northern Division at Lakewood High School on Feb. 9.
The Blue Knights, under head coach Kyle Steele, then enjoyed a good showing at the District 10 tournament at Randolph HS, Saturday, Feb. 16.
Senior Nashawn Brooks won the 220-pound title to lead the Blue Knights. Brooks last month won the 220 title at the Essex County Tournament in which he also was voted as the tournament’s Most Outstanding Wrestler.
At the district tournament, the Blue Knights were also led by Carl Banks, Brisner Xavier, Edwin Louis, Elton Jean Baptiste, and Jamal Joseph.
Carl Banks, at the 132-pound weight class, and Edwin Louis, at 285-pound heavyweight class, each took second place, while Xavier (145), Jean Baptiste (182), and Joseph (195) each finished third in their weight classes.
The Blue Knights finished fourth place out of eight schools in the team standings. Hanover Park won the district team title.
The six IHS wrestlers advanced to the Region 3 tournament a West Orange HS, Feb. 20, 22-23.
District 10 tournament. The region tournaments consists of the top three finishers in each weight class from the district tournaments.
