MAPLEWOOD – Maplewood resident Amber White competed in a Regional Open Circuit Fencing tournament April 2-3 in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. and brought home two Gold medals.

White, 15, won in both events that she competed in: Div. 2 and Div. 1A Women Saber, which earned her a B16 rating. When she arrived home the next day, she was given a trophy for making Individual All-State in Women’s Saber for High School Fencing. She had missed the New Jersey State banquet while competing in Florida.

White’s coach, 2008 Senegalese Olympian Abdoulaye Thiam, said, “Her training is steadily improving her skills, but now it is time for her to focus even more and not slack off in any way.” White trains at the new Tim Morehouse Fencing Club in New York City with Coach Abdoul and Coach Tim Morehouse. Morehouse is a three-time USA Olympian and won a Silver Medal in 2008.

White won two silver medals at a Regional Junior Cadet Circuit event in Boston the weekend of April 14-15. White, a high school freshman, lost gold in the Junior event to a Columbia University freshman.

In addition, White was selected to represent the United States in Reykjavik, Iceland on May 21.
