NUTLEY – Nutley High School senior captain Chloe Jelley began her second season with a big win in the 3,200-meters (12:18.84) at the Super Essex Conference-Liberty Division Track and Field Championship meet on May 14 at Schools Stadium in Newark.
Jelley ran a controlled race and pulled away from the field with two laps to go and easily claimed victory. Earlier in the day, she had claimed a silver medal in the 1,600 clocking a 5:31.48.
Fellow senior captain Jenna Marino was also a double medalist for the Raiders, grabbing a pair of sixth-place finishes in the shot put (31 feet-9 inches) and the discus (87-3).
The 4×400-meter relay team of Danielle Lohf, Julia Eltzholtz, Maisie Jelley, and Makayla Landfair ran 4:31.46 which earned them a fourth-place finish. Sophomore Jaela Small overcame tight hamstrings and bounded out to 31-7.75 in the triple jump to claim the bronze medal. Senior captain Justine Conca claimed fifth in the 800 meters in a time of 2:34.21.
Amanda Zheng ran a 5:56.49 to earn the sixth-place medal in the 1,600. Hanna Simcsuk finished fifth in the high jump at 4-6, while Julia Yang also claimed fifth in the pole vault at 7-6. Junior Olivia DeFluri threw a personal record of 86-3 in the javelin to claim the sixth-place medal.
Next up for the Raiders is the Essex County Championships held at the fabled Woodman Field in Montclair. It is such an action-packed meet that it needs to be spread out over two days. The action begins on Friday, May 20, at 4 p.m. and Saturday, May 21, at 10 a.m. Tickets go fast come on out and support the Raiders as they continue on in their second season.
