Nutley High’s Blair Watson nears Raiders’ girls’ basketball all-time scoring record

NUTLEY – Nutley High School senior basketball  standout Blair Watson needs 17 points to become the program’s all-time leading scorer.

Watson, a guard who signed with the University of Maryland this past November, has scored exactly 100 points through four games this season, bringing her career total to 1,586 points.

The Raiders’ next game is Tuesday, Jan. 5, at home against Newark Tech at 4 p.m.

The program record of 1,602 points is held by Kim DiVincenzo, a 1999 graduate.

21 points, Won, Weequahic, 73-13, Dec. 18, away.

29 points, Won, Montclair, 57-42, Dec. 22, home.

21 points, Won, Bernards, 45-24, Dec. 27, Westwood Holiday Tournament.

Did not play, Loss, Northern Valley/Demarest, 56-23, Dec. 28, Westwood Holiday Tournament.

29 points, Loss, Ridgewood, 62-61, overtime, Dec. 30, Westwood Holiday Tournament.

Watson has a chance to become the all-time leading scorer at NHS, boys and girls combined. The boys’ record is 1,855 points by Marty Higgins.

Against Bernards, Watson hit four 3-pointers. Courtney Wilde had seven points; Rebecca Granata and Jen Callaghan each had six points; and Sydney Kunz had five points for NHS.

In the loss to NV/Demarest, Wilde had a team-high 12 points, including three 3-pointers; Giavanna Modica had three points; Mackenzie Moraski, Kunz, Gianna Joyce, and Granata each had two points.

Watson led all scorers with 29 points with six 3-pointers in the tough one-point overtime loss to Ridgewood to finish in fourth place in the Westwood Holiday Tournament. Wilde had 12 points with two 3-pointers; Kunz had nine points; Granata scored six points and Alaina Feaster chipped in five points as NHS moved to a 3-2 record.

Against Montclair, Wilde had seven points and Feaster contributed six points.
