Nutley HS boys’ basketball team tops Caldwell, falls in Essex County Tournament

NUTLEY – Matt Schettino, a sophomore, scored 17 points and senior Geoff Bevere had 11 points to lead the Nutley High School boys’ varsity basketball team to a 55-45 home win over Caldwell on Feb. 2. Freshman Marty Higgins, senior Will Montgomery and GianCarlo Padilla each had six points; senior Antonio Olivo had four; senior Devin White had three and senior Devin Merritt added two.

The Raiders lost at Technology, 50-49, Feb. 3 in Newark. Schettino scored 20 points; Bevere had 14 points; Higgins had eight points; Montgomery had six and Padilla added one.

Schettino scored 15 points, but the Raiders lost to West Essex, 54-38, in the Essex County Tournament second preliminary round on Feb. 6. Olivo had 10 points for the 22nd-Raiders, who moved to a 9-8 record. West Essex is the No. 23 seed.

NHS lost at Fair Lawn, 76-60, Feb. 8 to move to a 9-9 record. Schettino had 26 points and Bevere had 18 points.
