NUTLEY, NJ (updated Friday Oct. 7, 12:22 p.m.) – The Nutley High School boys’ varsity soccer team defeated Super Essex Conference rival Columbia HS, 1-0, Oct. 6, at Glotzbach Field.
The first half was a see-saw battle with both teams having opportunities to score. The first half ended 0-0. The second half was a continuation of the first, as both teams had opportunities squandered.
The lone goal came with 20 minutes left in the second half off a free kick from junior Ilya Udalov, who blasted the ball around the wall to score his fifth goal of the season. Nutley played tough defense to help ensure the shutout, led by senior captains Anthony Cassie and Gerardo Flores. David Sanchez made eight saves to preserve the shutout.
The Raiders improved to a 6-5 record with their second straight win.
The Essex County Tournament seeds will be announced on Oct. 11.
The first preliminary round must be played on or by Oct. 13 and the second preliminary round must be played on or by Oct. 15.
The first round will be held on or by Oct. 19 at the higher-seeded sites. The quarterfinals are Saturday, Oct. 22, at the higher-seeded sites.
The semifinals doubleheader will be held Wednesday, Oct. 26, at Millburn HS at 5 p.m. and 7 p.m.
The championship game is Sunday, Oct. 30, at Montclair State University at 2 p.m. It is a doubleheader with the girls’ ECT championship game.
