Nutley HS boys’ soccer team upsets No. 3 seed Somerville in state tournament

NUTLEY, NJ – The 14th-seeded Nutley High School varsity boys’ soccer team upset third-seeded Somerville in the first round of the NJSIAA North Jersey Section 2, Group 3 state tournament on Tuesday,  Oct. 31.

The game was going back and forth for the entire 80 minutes. With 10 minutes left to play, senior captain Matt Scorsone scored a header, assisted by senior Dan Caraballo. Somerville was able to quickly respond with a goal of its own, causing the game to go into overtime. After two overtime periods, and no more goals, the two teams were headed for a penalty shootout. Austin Sweeney, JP Maruri, Scorsone, and Garrett Groeling all scored from the penalty spot. Junior Brandon Syto made six saves in the game and one save in the penalty shootout to give Nutley the win.

Somerville fell to 13-5-3.

The Raiders, who improved to a 9-10-2 record, will visit 11th-seeded Ferris in the quarterfinals on Friday, Nov. 3. The winner will face either No. 2 seed Hopewell Valley or No. 10 seed West Windsor Plainsboro-North in the semifinals on Nov. 7. Ferris defeated sixth-seeded Irvington, 5-3, in the first round.
