Nutley HS boys’ track and field team shines at SEC meet

NUTLEY – Junior Matt Dasilva and sophomore Jimmy Quinn came home with gold medals leading the Nutley High School boys’ track and field team in the Super Essex Conference-Liberty Division Championship Meet on May 14 at Schools Stadium in Newark.

In the 400-meter intermediate hurdles, a race that featured three of the top 15 runners in the state, Dasilva ran a personal best 57.38 to take fifth place.  Later in the day, he struck gold in the 800 meters, running his fastest time of the year at 2:00.17. His third race of the day proved to be the most exciting.  He took the baton in the 4×400 relay in seventh place. However, after running a 50.4 relay split, he had moved the Raiders into a tie for second place. The Raiders wound up finishing third, turning in their fastest time of the season at 3:30.03.  Quinn also rose to the occasion and claimed a first-place win for the Raiders in the 3,200 run in a lifetime fastest time of 10:11.95.  Earlier in the meet, Quinn claimed the third-place bronze medal in the 1,600 with a time of 4:35.54.

Junior Tarrin Goldberg came home with three medals for the Raiders. Goldberg ran a personal record 51.98 in the 400 meters to claim fifth, cleared 10-6 in the pole vault for fifth and was the anchor leg on the third place 4×400 relay team.  In addition to Goldberg and Dasilva, the 4×400 team had senior Mike Conca and sophomore Gerard Dimayuga running.  Junior Silvan Sooksatan also was a multiple medal winner for the Raiders.   He rose to the occasion with two PRs, in the long jump, 19-4, and triple jump, 40-5; good enough for a pair of fifth-place finishes.  Senior Lou Long claimed fourth in the javelin throw with a PR of 142-3 and the sixth-place medal in the pole vault by clearing 10-6. Senior Luke Michels was a double medalist as well for the Raiders, claiming a pair of fourth-place finishes in the 1,600 (4:35.99) as well as the 3,200 (10:39.12). Junior Eric Vogler grabbed a pair of sixth-place finishes in the 1,600 (4:42.06) and the 3,200 (10:51.93).  In the high jump, senior Giancarlo Padilla cleared 5-8 to claim the fifth-place medal and sophomore Anthony Fabiano had a huge 4-inch PR to clear 5-8 as well that earned him the sixth-place medal.

Next up for the Raiders is the Essex County Championships held at the fabled Woodman Field in Montclair.  It is such an action-packed meet that it needs to be spread out over two days.  The action begins on Friday, May 20, at 4 p.m. and Saturday, May 21, at 10 a.m.  Tickets go fast. Come on out and support the Raiders as they continue on in their second season.
