NUTLEY, NJ – The Nutley High School Raider cross-country teams, under head coach Gerry Ryan, wrapped up the 2016 season with a tough performance at the North I Group 3 State Championships on the challenging paths of Garret Mountain Park on Saturday, Nov. 5.
The boys finished 13th overall with a team average of 18:27, led by Jimmy Quinn and his 16th place finish in 17:08. The girls’ team finished 10th overall with a 22:40 team average, led by Ellie McCreesh’s 18th place finish at 21:02.
In addition to Quinn’s 17:08, the boys’ team had senior captains Matt Dasilva (18:15) and Eric Vogler (18:50) in the No. 2 and No. 3 spots for the Raiders. Freshman Nick Duca wrapped up his impressive rookie campaign with an 18:55. Vinny Marinaro rounded out the top five for the Raiders with a 19:08 clocking. Phil Amiths was the No. 6 runner for the Raiders at 20:28. Junior Gerard Dimayuga was injured during the race and was unable to finish due to an ankle sprain.
The girls’ team saw McCreesh come in at 21:02, followed by senior captain Amanda Zheng’s 22:40 in the No. 2 spot. Shawna Lewis was the No. 3 runner for the Raiders with a 22:50 clocking, while Jaela Small came in at 23:05. Senior captain Nicolette Contella wrapped up her four-year varsity career in the No. 5 spot with a 23:44. Isabella Bernardo was the Raiders’ No. 6 at 24:00, while senior Katelyn Gil battled through a knee injury and finished in 25:38.
With no Raiders advancing to the Group 3 state meet, their season came to an end. The future does remain bright for both teams with a solid core of runners returning next fall.
