NUTLEY — The Nutley High School football team lost a heartbreaking 15-13 decision to Bergenfield on Saturday afternoon, Oct. 23, at Tangorra Field/Park Oval.
It was the first home game since the death of former NHS football head coach Steve DiGregorio, who died the previous week after a battle with cancer. DiGregorio coached last year’s 6-0 Nutley team after coaching 12 seasons for the Raiders in two stints.
The Raiders’ two-game win streak ended. Nutley moved to a 6-2 overall record on the season. The loss also ended Nutley’s 10-game home win streak dating to the 2019 season.
The Raiders trailed 15-0 before mounting a comeback in the fourth quarter.
Senior quarterback Matt Harbison scored on a 1-yard run to cut it 15-7. The Raiders then recovered a Bergenfield fumble. On the first play, Nutley scored on a screen pass to cut it to 15-13 with 1:26 left in the game. Nutley attempted a two-point conversion to tie the game, but the attempt failed.
Nutley will visit West Essex on Friday night, Oct. 29, at 7 p.m. in the final regular season game, which will determine the Super Football Conference–American Red Division title. Both teams are 4-0 in the division, West Essex also is 6-2 overall.
