Nutley HS football team gears up for home opener vs. Pascack Valley; seeks first win of season

NUTLEY, NJ (updated Monday, Sept. 19, 12:32 p.m.) – The Nutley High School varsity football team seeks its first win of the season during its home opener on Saturday, Sept. 24, against Pascack Valley at 1 p.m. at Tangorra Field in a North Jersey Super Football Conference non-division game.

The Raiders fell to 0-2 on the season after losing to Bloomfield, 39-17, Friday, Sept. 16, at Foley Field in Bloomfield’s home opener. Bloomfield improved to 2-0 in this NJSFC non-division game.

Hunter Lechthaler kicked a 35-yard field goal in the first quarter to cut Bloomfield’s lead to 6-3.

In the second quarter, Matt Roser had touchdown runs of 2 and 6 yards, and Frank DeMaio hit RJ Ferrarelli on a two-point conversion pass for the Raiders, who trailed 27-17 at the half.

In the third quarter, the Raiders’ defense got stingy with a couple of goal-line stands, led by Sam Coppola, Justin Bivona, Ferrarelli, and Elijah Butts. Bloomfield added a safety to led 29-17 at the end of the third.

The Raiders were knocking on the door in the fourth quarter, but couldn’t cash in. Bloomfield added 10 points to close out the scoring.

Pascack Valley also is 0-2 after losing to Northern Valley/Old Tappan, 33-20, Sept. 16. Pascack Valley won the 2014 state North Jersey, Section 1, Group 4 title.
