Zoe Steck breaks Nutley HS girls’ soccer team’s all-time goal scoring record; Raiders move to 6-0-1 on season

NUTLEY, NJ –The Nutley High School girls’ varsity soccer team kicked off the season in impressive fashion, going unbeaten in its first seven games.

The Raiders, under fifth-year head coach Mike DiPiano, had an impressive 6-0-1 mark through Sept. 23.

Leading the team is senior forward/captain Zoe Steck, who has scored a whopping 14 goals this season and became the all-time leading goal-scorer for the NHS girls’ soccer program. Steck set the record when she scored three goals in the 4-0 win over Verona on Sept. 23 at Father Glotzbach Field, giving her 80 career goals to break the mark of 79 held by Victoria Kealy, a 2015 NHS graduate. Steck will continue her soccer career at the University of Connecticut on an athletic scholarship.

The Raiders opened the season with a 4-1 win over Caldwell High School on Sept. 9 in Caldwell. Steck had a hat trick and added an assist. Sophomore forward Giulia Polewka had a goal; and junior midfielder Isabella Gonsiewski and senior midfielder/captain Jennifer Callaghan each had one assist. Junior goalie Jillian DeSantis made two saves and sophomore goalie Alessandra Santoriello made three saves for NHS.

Steck and Callaghan each had two goals and one assist in the 5-2 win over Montclair Kimberley Academy on Sept. 12 at Father Glotzbach Field. Gonsiewski had one goal and one assist; and sophomore midfielder Emily DeAngelo and junior midfielder Maisie Jelley each had one assist in the win. Santoriello made three saves and DeSantis had two saves.

Steck and Callaghan each had a goal, and they were both assisted by Gonsiewski in the 2-0 win over West Orange High School in West Orange. Santoriello and DeSantis each had one save.With Nutley trailing 1-0 at the half, Steck scored in the second half in the 1-1 tie with Cranford on Sept. 17 in Cranford. DeSantis made seven saves and Santoriello made three saves.

Steck scored both goals with assists from Gonsiewski and DeAngelo in a 2-0 win over Glen Ridge on Sept. 19 at Watsessing Park in Bloomfield. DeSantis made eight saves.
Nutley defeated Millburn, 3-0, Sept. 21, at Glotzbach Field. Steck had two goals and one assist; Polewka had one goal; Gonsiewski and Callaghan each had one assist and DeSantis made three saves.
