Nutley HS girls’ track and field team tops Bloomfield

NUTLEY – The Nutley High School Raider girls’ track and field team opened the dual meet season with a narrow 68-63 victory over Bloomfield on April 5 at Foley Field in Bloomfield.

Senior Jenna Marino won the discus (70 feet) and the shot put (32 feet, personal record), Senior Chloe Jelley won the 1,600-meter run and 3,200, and sophomore Maisie Jelley won the long jump (14 feet, 1 inch) and was on the winning 4×400-meter relay team to key the Raiders’ victory.

Juniors Darby Fischer and Makayla Landfair and sophomore Jaela Small were also on the winning 4×400 team.

Junior Hanna Simcsuk won the 400 intermediate hurdles in 76.4 seconds and was second in the high jump (4 feet, 8 inches). Junior Sara McEnery won the triple jump (29 feet, 8 inches) and scored in the high jump (4 feet, 6 inches).  Sophomore Shawna Lewis was second in the 1,600; senior Erin Neri scored in the javelin and discus; and senior Sophie Farrell scored in the shot put and discus.

The NHS boys, meanwhile, lost a tough one to Bloomfield. The Raiders had a very strong showing in the distance races. However, they were unable to overcome Bloomfield’s depth in the sprints and field events, dropping their opening meet, 82.5 to 55.5.

The Raiders were led by junior Matt DaSilva, who won the 800 and the 400 hurdles and was on the winning 4×400 relay team.  The distance team had a strong showing, led by sophomore Jimmy Quinn, who won the 1,600 and tied for the win with senior teammate Luke Michels in the 3,200.  Michels was second in the 1,600. The Raiders also scored a victory in the pole vault with senior Lou Long claiming victory.

Next up for the Raiders is the always competitive and fun, but usually cold Dodgertown Relays at Madison HS.
