NUTLEY – The Nutley High School girls’ indoor track and field team tied for seventh overall with Weequahic among the 18 scoring teams at the Essex County Relays on Sunday, Jan. 3, at the Jersey City Armory.
Junior Hannah Simcsuk and sophomore Jaela Small combined to finish second in the high jump relay. Simcsuk leaped 4 feet, 8 inches and Small leaped 4 feet, 6 inches.
Sophomore Shawna Lewis, senior Justine Conca, junior Amanda Zheng and sophomore Ellie McCreesh took fourth place in the 4×800-meter relay in 10:49.51.
Junior Nicolette Contella joined Lewis, Conca and McCreesh in placing fifth in the distance medley relay in 14:25.16.
The NHS boys’ team also gave good efforts despite not finishing in the top six in the events.
At the Super Essex Conference-Liberty Division Championship meet on Dec. 27 at the Jersey City Armory, the NHS boys’ and girls’ teams both finished in ninth place overall in their respective standings. Simscuk tied for fifth in the girls’ high jump. Small, freshman Jillian Garner, senior Danielle Mannino and junior Makayla Landfair took sixth in the girls’ 4×400 in 4:43.86. Lewis took sixth in the girls’ 1,600-meter run, with 5:49.64.
On the boys’ side, junior Matt DaSilva took sixth in the 800-meter run in 2:05.89. In the high jump, junior Silvan Sooksatan was fifth at 5-10.
