Nutley HS ice hockey team wins three straight to improve to 9-6-2

NUTLEY – The Nutley High School varsity ice hockey team defeated Brick Memorial and Mount Olive to improve to a 9-6-2 record.

Senior forward Brendan Ruiz scored 3:12 into the third period to give the Raiders a 2-1 win over Brick Memorial on Jan. 28 at Clary Anderson Arena in Montclair.

Senior forwards Christian McCue and Danny Render each had an assist on Ruiz’s game-winner.

Junior forward Gerard LaFuria scored on an assist by senior forward Zach Vaughan, 1:20 into the game, to put the Raiders up 1-0. Brick Memorial tied it in the second period.

Senior goalie Joe Hoarle made 20 saves for NHS.

McCue had a hat trick to power the Raiders to a 9-6 win over Mount Olive on Monday, Feb. 1, at Richard J. Codey Arena.

McCue also added two assists.

Vaughan had two goals and two assists; Render had two goals and one assist; sophomore Cullen McCormack posted one goal and one assist; LaFuria scored one goal; senior Greg O’Connell collected three assists; Ruiz recorded two assists; and junior Dan Caputo and senior Joe Fontanals each had one assist.

Hoarle made 29 saves as the Raiders won their third straight game.
